The Divine Service
The Divine Service is the “beating heart” of our life in the Church. In the Divine Service the Holy Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – gives us His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is also the Light of the world who enlightens us with the gift of faith in His cross-won mercy and life. The Paschal candle testifies to Christ’s glorious resurrection for the life of the world.
By Water and Word
God makes us His children through the washing of water and the Word of God (see Ephesians 5:26; John 3:5; & Titus 3:4-7). In Holy Baptism not only are our sins washed away, but we are also given new life to live, work, serve, and play as God’s faithful people.
The Altar
The Altar is the focal point of our sanctuary and the entire liturgy. Our attention is drawn away from ourselves and we get to focus on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). From the altar we receive the life-giving Body and Blood of Christ for our forgiveness, life, and salvation, and then we also pray toward the altar as we call upon our Savior “in every trouble, pray, praise and give thanks” (Small Catechism).
The Pelican in her Piety
Prominently displayed on the altar at Hope, and at eye level for those who kneel at the Communion rail, we see the pelican in her piety. According to ancient tradition the pelican fed her chicks with her own blood. This symbol reminds us of the reality of Christ here giving us his true Body and Blood in His Holy Supper.
True Drink
Jesus said, “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:54). When we take and drink from the cup holding the true Blood of Christ, we are united to Him and to one another as we receive His gifts of life and forgiveness.
